Week 1

Describe an example from your life of when you were taught using one or more of the methods described in the reading: behaviourism, cognitivism, constructivism and connectivism.

As I am in the Bachelor of Education program, this year we completed a course on Math instruction. The main project in this course consisted of our class divided into groups, and teaching a lesson. Each class that a group did not teach, we had readings about different ways to implement types of math into our classrooms in a hands-on way. Throughout the class, we often did a few math questions in our notebook, but never explicitly learned how to teach the math.

In our groups, we were all given a different math topic, and were told to plan a lesson on it, and create resources to teach to the class. However, our lesson on how to teach the topic from the professor would happen directly after the student taught lesson. Most of us have not touches these math topics since we were in elementary school our selves, creating dificulty.

This teaching style would be constructivism and connectivism. For constructivism, we were creating our own understanding of teaching each topic and passing it onto our classmates. Our knowledge was built by allowing our classmates practice teaching, as well as work collaboratively with others to create successful lessons.

For connectivism, our learning of our assigned topic was self-directed, as well as collaborative with peers. I felt it was very in the style of connectivism; however, we completed our lesson in real time, and not online.

From having this experience, I think the idea of us having teach other topics was good, however, I do wish we could have had the lesson from our professor first. It had almost felt like we were teaching the course instead, which was a good experience, but frustrating in a way that we were guessing the proper way to teach it. I know that there are “new” math ways too compared to the “old” math, which we were preferred to do the “new” math, making it 10x more confusing. However, education is very much learning throughout the job and ever continuing, so I can’t wait to learn more in different teaching styles!
